Greatest Hex Hack Ever

Finally, all of us who have multi-monitors can run flash videos in full screen on one monitor and continue to do things on the other with this cunning hex hack(youtube video). I recommend using a hex editor such as FRHED.

I am mega happy with that. No updating for flash for me though. Boom.

Ham it up, Park it Down

Well, I was bored of having XP on my laptop, and felt like I should do something l33t, which I hadn't done a short while, and Stu or someone showed me gOS, which is a sort of gui/Google gadgets blend, that sits on top of the Ubuntu linux distro. Needless to say it was pretty and cool, so I wiped my laptop and installed it. Very cool, though the internet on my laptop has gone slow and I can't work out why. Postcards kids.

While fiddling, I discovered that Wine can't run the latest version of iTunes for windows, so couldn't access my desktops iTunes Daap sharing thanks to their new encryption. So I decided to switch to Songbird, which I may have mentioned before, is an open source iTunes clone, developed in a similar manner to Firefox, i.e. there are extensions etc. Well its very good so I've swapped it for iTunes on both PCs. Unfortunately, it won't share over network, so I had to get the Firefly Daap server thing, which is alright, though cos of the slow net on my lappy I'm a bit confuzzled. Still. Whoop.

File Sharing

So you want to do some file sharing across a local network on your Windows XP pc aye? And it seems to be set up right, but then you try and double-click on the computer and it gives you a similar, if not exactly the same message as:

"\\COMPUTER1\ is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

Access is denied
"

So you're like "shit dude, this be hella wack", so you try to go to "\\COMPUTER1\MUSIC\" manually through the address bar, and it works. Freaky. How doth one fix this? Like this:

On computer 1 got run in the start menu and type regedit. Then navigate to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\LSA and change the value of the RestrictAnonymous to 0. Now reboot (THIS STEP IS VITAL).

Now it should work, and you love me. Good times.

Sleep comes with a knife, fork and a spoon...

Time for a tech attack in your raptor powered rack. My new Chinese phone, made by unknown manufacturer 'K-Touch' is surprisingly good. The D770, at 80 quid, although feeling cheap, has a 3 mega-pixel camera, large touch sceren, built in telescopic stylus, keypad, motion sensor AND can run 2 sim cards simultanously with no switching required. Great for the gadget whoring backpacker. So I have an English sim and a Chiense sim plugged in there. Comes with 2 batteries, an external battery charger (as well as internal) and an AV cable. Also takes MicroSD cards. AS long as you get someone to swap to English menus it's fine, though the sms dictionary is a bit limited and some error messages are still in chinese. Sim selection is easy and can be done when sending messages and calling. A grand phone and I don't care much about it.

UPDATE: The charger plug is totally mashed and I need a new one. Bum clouds.

*swears violently*

One of my long term "rivals" or "enemies" appears to like the Eels, Death Cab For Cutie and The Postal Service. Fucker. He/She is not allowed to like such awesome bands. *curb stomp*

In other news my phone was annoying me, cos I couldn't turn off the camera sounds for voyeuristic tendencies. So I hacked into the phones firmware and manually deleted them *Grins* Here are two extremely funny clips that you should really check out, especially if you have Geek blood:

and then two more geek related funtabs:

Exeter, a city of Viewty

Even with a hangover, I went into town at 10.30, as my mum had already stormed in and I felt bad. I had a horrendously hungover conversation with crazy orange dude, who was also hungover, and pestering me about round-the-world travels. After preventing vomit occurring, I eventually chose a sexy cool fun, more on that later. I then utilised tescos BLT buying facilities, as well as a juice, and managed to keep them down in the pits of my poisoned stomach. I then met mother down by the Quay, watching some quite interesting free video about the history of Exeter. We then wandered along the river, cross over a bouncy bridge and then walked back along. I then showed her the delights of a wetherspoon Sunday Lunch, as well as a rhubarb, Bramley apple and ginger crumble. Very very nice, but I was extremely stuffed. We wandered around a bit and looked in a few shops ourselves.

In the evening I met up with young Stu again, and we grabbed a drink in the Firehouse before attacking the Vue to watch Alien Vs Predator: Requiem. It was most average, perhaps under par. We should have seen Sweeny Todd. Error.

Right, now the important information, I got an LG Viewty. *waits for shocked gasps* Yes, I know, an iphone rip off. Except it has modern features, i.e. it supports 3G, and has a 5 megapixel camera! The video is even 640x480, and can film at 120fps, which is most excellent. Most of the menus, texting etc are controlled by the touch screen just with your fingers. Text can be entered either via the normal number pad, a qwerty keyboard or with the help of an eyeliner style stylus, handwriting. The qwerty keyboard is by far the easiest and most efficient to use, even with my fat fat thumbs. Other features include an Organiser, Pdf reading capabilities, Divx playing, mp3 player, radio, Java, web browser, texting, phone calling and a clock. Oh and I have a fish on the front that follows my finger, it's very cute.

If like me, you're up at 4:21am

And happen to look at a Gmail account you forgot you had, that has been filled to brim with emails from monster.co.uk, porninyoureye.com, and various other suspicious websites, and you may have a similar version of OCD that means you hate having even one unread email in your inbox, then you'll want some form of l337 way to mark them all as unread. Unfortunately, as they fall off the edge of the page of gmail you can't just select unread emails.

My first stop was to the Gmail api to write some form of batch hacking program. This, I decided, was over-kill, and decided instead to use filters. Therefore, kids, here is my step by step guide to marking all your Gmail email's as read:

  1. Next to the Search The Web button at the top there is a link called Create a filter. Click it in the face.
  2. In the From text box type "@" without the quotes (or you can use "*").
  3. Click the Next Step button, then once the next screen shows, all your emails will be displayed below, or at least the first 20. It should say something like 1-20 of hundreds.
  4. Tick the check box marked Mark as read.
  5. Tick the check box marked Also apply to # conversations below.
  6. Click the Create Filter button.
  7. Now all of your emails have been marked as read.
  8. IMPORTANT: Now simple click delete next to the filter you have just created, it will most probably be at the bottom of your filters list, otherwise all your new emails will automatically be marked as read and your face will melt.
It's pretty simple, but what the poop. Take it or leave it or sell it to the highest bidder.

Smart arse reasons why I chose the best console: Part 5341

Yes children, from my lovely perch of superiority I once more have discovered even more proof that the xbox 360 is better than the PS3 for all games so far. Look, if you will, at the two videos below, comparing half-life 2 and Portal on both consoles. Marvel at how the 360 has shorted load times, better frame rates, and the graphics are at least the same, if not better than the PS3:

All hail me, my smugness and everything else that doesn't involve homo-erotic behavior when drunk.

The N8XX debacle

Well kids, as your favourite gadget-whore, my extensive research and impulse obsessions have once more confounded my best decision making abilities. As mentioned before I'm thinking of getting the n810, however, there is also the n800 around.
Reasons why the n800 may be worse?

  • No hardware Qwerty keyboard
  • No GPS
  • Comes with OS 2007
  • Slightly bigger
Why it may be better
  • OS 2007 runs more apps than 2008 currently, plus u can upgrade.
  • Clock speed increase not much
  • CHEAPER!
  • FM Radio
  • An extra SD slot, so can transfer between SD cards.
  • Everything else is same, including screen res, touch screen, ram, wireless etc etc.
  • It's actually out already, so has firmware fixes.
What's the price difference u ask? well play.com has the n800 for £150 (tho it's a pre-order for a 9th Nov release?!). The n810, when released, is likely to be £280, possibly more as play lists it as £499.99?! Interesting. On top of this, for that price difference I can get a sexy digital camera I've been looking at, the Casio EX-Z1050. Which is £122 and uses SD cards like the N8XX. It's also mega sexy.

Then again I probably don't need an internet tablet. But I'm not that clever.

Geeky things I have done that are awesome:

  • Running a VNC server so I can remotely control my pc
  • Running a SCP server so I can remotely download files
  • Writing a taskbar "to do" list manager in C#
  • Re-writing my random wallpaper selector in c#
  • Writing a Regression, rule based genetic programming program in Java
  • Getting a 3D virtual desktop manager for windows
  • Implementing the A* path finding algorithm in c#
  • Using 13 PCs at once, then demanding more
  • Streaming my music collection across the web for myself

Code Alert! - If you get this error:

The item "SomethingSexy.cs" was specified more than once in the "Sources" parameter. Duplicate items are not supported by the "Sources" parameter.

If you do some crazy ass copying of cs files, sometimes it fucks up the sources parameter in your csproj file. To fix, just open up your csproj file in notepad or a better alternative and under the Project\PropertyGroup\ItemGroup\Compile node "SomethingSexy.cs" will be referenced twice. Just delete one of them and the world is your oyster. Or delete more stuff and break your project. either way....

Threading in C#: Code Alert!

Okay, so you have a GUI, and you think you're sexy. Then you run some big task and cos you're not using threads your GUI is as useful as a pile of potatos at a cannibal convent. Unless I guess they had humans in cages and fed them potatos to fatten them up... anyway...

So you have say Form1 as ur form class, it helps to have your main method in there as well for shits and giggles, then when you clicky a button you can just do something like this:

MainClass main; /* The class that has the method we'll use */
Thread mainThread; /* The thread object itself */

/* Instantiate the object */
main = new MainClass(arg1, arg2, bla);

/* Instantiate the thread and define the method that will be used when the thread runs */
mainThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(main.Go) );

/* Start the thread */
mainThread.Start();

And you're all like, "how terrible erogenous". If you want your method (Go) to have parameters, you have to do some delegating shit that I couldn't be bothered by. That's why all my arguments are parsed when I instantiate the mainclass. Also remember to slam using System.Threading; at the top.....

Then you're all like up in my grill saying "Hey Guy, I want to update some shitty form content up in here from my 2nd thread" so I'm like. K. When you instantiated the class object, parse though the form object you want to modify, set it as a global thing, then just have a method to change it:

private void ChangeStatus(){
if (labelstatus.InvokeRequired){
labelstatus.Invoke(new System.Windows.Forms.MethodInvoker(ChangeStatus));

}else{
labelstatus.Text = "Finished!";
}
}

If you don't do the invoking you get crazy errors like "Cross thread operation not valid: Go faceplant yourself"....

That's my c# tutorial for today. Apologises for the informal gangsta format.

Sup fools

In orpington at the moment, I have a lot of blogging to catch up on, but to that later. Currently I'm trying to do things with my crappy laptop, so am replacing all my resource hungry programs. This is just a little note on what I've changed things to, in case anyone wants to reduce their memory footprint/usage on a crappy PC.

Music player: I swapped FROM Media Player Classic, which is pretty awesomely fast, to Evil Player, which has an even lower memory footprint (1-2MB).

Browser: Firefox, although is awesome really sux my 256mb of RAM dry, so I swapped to Opera for now, which seems to be better in various tests on the internet. Tho Internet Exploiter may be better in some cases, it stinks of doggy doo doo. Unfortuneatly, Opera seems to be sucking a moderate amount of RAM as well, tho not as much.

Bitorrent Client: Luckily I current use utorrent, and you can't get much better than that, so I'm sticking with that shizzle.

Messenger(MSN) client: This is kinda odd, MSN is sucky, then I installed pidgin (GAIM) but that used even more! Now I'm using trillian(which I used to use in my l337 days), which seems horrendous, 33mb at the moment. Now swapped to miranda, which is definitly better than all previous ones. Our final winner appears to be Easy Message, as although I can't set even a photo, it only uses 9MB, and minerva hurt my brain.

If anyone has any more suggests, comment it. As long as it isn't Safari.

My mp3s sorted by play count....

Guess who my favourite band is...

Oh the worries of Genetic Programming in C.

Artificial Intelligence Joke of the Day:

Tom's Out of Date Technology collection:

That's right boys and gals, lets check out what technology I still use that is ridiciously out of date and hurts my soul:

1) Creative Nomad Jukebox Zen 20gb

About 3 and half years old, it's actually a laptop harddrive in an mp3 player metal shell. My screen backlight hasn't worked for over 2 years and its battery time is getting a bit suspicious but I love it with my soul. Possibly the most indestructable mp3 player ever, I've dropped it onto concrete by accident before and dents can be easily hammered out by unscrewing the shell. No stupid DRM software, just plays my mp3s with skill and clarity. Bonus.

2) My Dell m770 CRT monitor
Nuff said. Sucks, probably burning my retinas, though its lasted me *thinks* probably 6 years?

3) My PC

Again 3 years old, with a graphics card that can't physically play the latest games and sometimes has a hissy fit. A processor that's lasted me well but is severely behind the times and one of the hard drives has a fetish for deleting my mp3s during its trimonthly crashes. Somehow its still stupidly stable running Windows XP Professional, current uptime is 41 Days, 1 Hours, 10 Minutes, 43 Seconds. Take that global warming. (disclaimer: photo not of my PC, experiences may vary)

4) Panasonic VS6
Due to me being a stupidly poor student, instead of getting the latest nokia I had to get this heap of cheapness when my K750i broke. Its surprisingly good value for money, but lacks a screen on the front so I have no idea who is calling and can't ignore it when people like Stu call. It also has a crap amount of memory and its software is slightly pondersome.

4) HP-Compaq nx9005 Laptop
Over 3 years old it has the power and skill of a spaktarded dead baby lemming. Though it still has its uses when working on campus, it can barely run two things at once and has a suspiciously reduced in power during its lifespan. There was a time when it could play Vice City. I won't bore you with the specs, but needless to say, the battery lasts about 1.5 hours. Shit cakes anonymous. It also weighs 3.6 tons and is larger than my love for tuna.

5) Casio EX-Z4B Camera
Not that bad, 4 megapixels, but I can't fecking record more than 60 seconds of vid before it stops. Whats the damn point in that?! plus I can't hack it. Still its pretty good, except I got ripped off cos I bought it from Dixons. Yeah that girl is in my room. BAM.
